Pilgrimage Itinerary

Day 1 - Thursday, 10th October
We will depart in the afternoon from Dublin to Rome with Aer lingus. Upon arrival in Fiumicino airport we will be met by our tour escort and drive to the four-star Hotel Clodio where we will stay for four nights on a bed and breakfast basis.

Day 2 - Friday, 11th October
After morning Mass, we will walk to the famous St. Peter's Basilica. Situated on Vatican Hill in the UNESCO world heritage site of Vatican City, St Peter's Basilica dominates the skyline of Rome and attracts millions of visitors from all over the world.

We will enjoy a guided tour of the basilica where we will see Michelangelo's delicate Piet statue, the canopy altar where the Pope celebrates Mass and the crypt of the Popes.

We will visit the Church of Santa Maria in Vallicella, known as the Chiesa Nuova and the mother church of the Oratorians, the congregation of secular priests founded by Saint Philip Neri in 1561, the same order as John Henry Newman.

After free time for lunch in nearby Piazza Navona we will visit the Pantheon, the most preserved and influential building of ancient Rome and have time at the famous Trevi fountain, not forgetting to throw a coin, ensuring our return to the Eternal City!

Day 3 - Saturday, 12th October
This morning we will visit the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the oldest of the four Papal basilicas in Rome and official seat of the Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis. We will have the opportunity to climb the Holy Stairs, the sacred staircase which Christ is said to have ascended to be sentenced to crucifixion by Pontius Pilate.

We will walk to the Irish College. Founded in 1628, this is the last of the many Irish Colleges that is still a seminary from the many that were once scattered over Europe. We will celebrate Mass and afterwards enjoy a tour of the college.

After free time for lunch we will enjoy a leisurely walk, passing by the famous Colosseum, one of the capital's most remarkable monuments and see the nearby impressive monument of Victor Emmanuel II or The Wedding Cake as it is commonly known.

Day 4 - Sunday, 13th October
This morning in St. Peter's Square, the Holy Father will canonise Cardinal John Henry Newman, the theologian, educational reformer and founder of University College Dublin (UCD) and without doubt one of the most prominent converts to Catholicism from Anglicanism in the 19th century.

This afternoon we will enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of Rome with a visit to the famous Spanish Steps - a favourite spot for tourists. Here we will have time to sit, relax and enjoy the views of wonderful Piazza di Spagna.

Day 5 - Monday, 14th October
This morning we will check out of our hotel and transfer to Fiumicino airport for our return flight to Dublin.

Please note our group have been officially registered to attend the canonization ceremony and entrance to St. Peter's Square will be controlled by Vatican officials. As we must follow the instructions of both Vatican and Roman authorities the above itinerary is subject to change.

*It is our intention to follow the itinerary as outlined above, however due to many factors like local holidays, traffic or weather conditions it may be necessary to make changes to the order of events or even the cancelation of certain events.
