Pilgrimage Itinerary

DAY 1 - Shrine of St. Maria Goretti, Nettuno

We will depart in the afternoon from Cork to Rome where upon arrival we will be met by our tour escort and transfer to our hotel in Nettuno where we will spend the first night of our pilgrimage. We will celebrate the opening Mass of our pilgrimage at the Shrine of St. Maria Goretti, an Italian virgin-martyr of the Catholic Church and one of the youngest canonised saints. The millions of faithful in attendance at her canonisation symbolised the reaction of millions touched by the simple story of Maria Goretti. After time for private prayer at the tomb of the saint we will drive to our hotel and after checking into our rooms have time to relax before dinner.

DAY 2 - Piana Romana & Pietrelina

This morning, we will depart Nettuno and begin to walk in the footsteps of Padre Pio, as we visit his birthplace of Petrelcina. Our guided tour of the town will include visits to the Forgione Family home where baby Francesco was born, the Church of Sant'Anna where he was baptised and the parish church where he celebrated his first Mass. We will celebrate Mass in the parish church of Piana Romana, and afterwards visit the Forgione family farm. In the small chapel dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi we will have time for private prayer before the tree beneath which Padre Pio received the first signs of the stigmata. Afterwards we will continue our drive to San Giovanni Rotondo. Arriving at our hotel, within walking distance to the sanctuary, we will check into our rooms and after dinner have the opportunity to participate in the Marian Torchlight Procession.

DAY 3 - English Office, Capuchin friary, Church of St. Pio of Pietrelcina

The English Office was founded by Fr. Alessio Parente to welcome English-speaking pilgrims arriving in San Giovanni Rotondo. After the celebration of morning Mass, we will visit the English Office and learn more of the life of Padre Pio before receiving a blessing with the glove and crucifix used by the humble friar.

In the afternoon, our guided tour of the sanctuary will allow us to walk in the footsteps of Padre Pio during his years in San Giovanni Rotondo. Our guide will take us to the ancient Church of Our Lady of Grace where Padre Pio celebrated Mass and heard confessions before continuing onto the capuchin friary, where we will learn more about the poor friar who prays as Padre Pio often described himself. Our day will conclude in the Church of St. Pio of Pietrelcina where there will be time for private prayer before the remains of the great saint of our time.

DAY 4 - Sanctuary of Our Lady of Incoronata, St. Matthew's Monastery Monday, 30th September This morning, we will drive to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Incoronata which dates to an apparition of the Virgin Mary which took place in April 1001 which according to tradition, appears to have been the first time the Virgin Mary claimed to be the Mother of God, after she was given the title in 431. After the celebration of Mass, we will be blessed with the holy oil and afterwards have time for private prayer before the statue of Our Lady with the Baby Jesus, which was placed on the knee of Our Lady by Pope John Paul II during his visit on the 24th of May 1987. We will drive to the town of San Marco in Lamis to visit St. Matthew's Monastery - a place rich in history, art, culture and above all full of faith and spirituality. In this beautiful setting, we will receive a blessing with the relic of St. Matthew the apostle and Holy Oil.

DAY 5 - Shrine of St. Michael the Archangel, Way of the Cross

Padre Pio had a great devotion to St. Michael the Archangel and travelled on pilgrimage to the shrine in Monte Sant Angelo. During our morning drive to the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to the Archangel Michael, we will hear of the apparitions of the Archangel Michael and have the privilege of celebrating Mass in the sacred cave. Afterwards there will be time at leisure to stroll through the streets of this unique town with its quaint, white-washed houses.

Walking the Way of the Cross in the afternoon will allow us as Christians, to pause and enter reflectively into those last moments of Jesus's journey of love.

DAY 6 - Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza

In 1956 Padre Pio presented to the world his greatest gift, Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza which today is now one of the most important hospitals in Italy. An important part in the story of Padre Pio, after morning Mass we will visit the hospital and learn of the history behind what is regarded as Padre Pio's greatest creation, and of the wonderful work that continues to this day. We will have the afternoon at leisure for confessions or to return to the crypt of St. Pio for private prayer.

DAY 7 - Mass in the ancient Church of Our Lady of Grace

This morning, after the celebration of Mass in the ancient Church of Our Lady of Grace, we will depart from the town of St. Pio, and with views of the contrasting landscapes enjoy our afternoon drive to Rome. Upon arrival at our hotel, we will check into our rooms and have dinner.

DAY 8 - Church of Santa Maria della Scala (Relic of St. Teresa of Avila)

After breakfast, we will check out of our hotel and drive to the Church of Santa Maria della Scala, home to a precious relic that has been carefully preserved since 1617 - the right foot of St. Teresa of Avila, gifted to the church in 1617. We will celebrate the closing Mass of our pilgrimage and afterwards have time for prayer before our departure from Rome to Fiumicino airport for our return flight to Cork.

Please note as San Giovanni Rotondo is a hill-top town with a number of inclines which need to be negotiated to arrive at the sanctuary, it is not suitable for wheelchair users. As a result, there is no official local facility for hire of wheelchairs or mobile aids.

*It is our intention to follow the itinerary as outlined above, however due to many factors like local holidays, traffic or weather conditions it may be necessary to make changes to the order of events or even the cancelation of certain events.
