Pilgrimage Itinerary

DAY 1 - 20 May

This morning we will depart from Dublin to Rome. On arrival we will be greeted by our Marian Pilgrimages guide and driver who will remain with us for the duration of our pilgrimage. The breath-taking view of the Italian countryside will make for an enjoyable drive to the town of Roccaporena, birthplace of St. Rita. Upon arriving at our hotel, we will check into our rooms and have time for lunch.

After celebrating the opening Mass of our pilgrimage, we will learn about Rita’s early years as a daughter with a visit to the house where she was born, before moving onto the house where she lived her married life as a wife and mother. We will drive the short distance to Cascia and learn how Rita was miraculously transported to the monastery in Cascia and of the 40 years she spent as an Augustinian nun. We will enjoy a visit to the monastery passing through the cloister with the miraculous vine and visiting the Oratory of the Crucifix where, tradition says, Rita received the stigmata. Our wondrous day will conclude with a visit to the Basilica of St. Rita where we will have time for prayer before the remains of the “Saint of the Impossible.”

DAY 2 - 21 May

This morning we will walk the Stations of the Cross culminating at our arrival at the Garden of the Miracle. Tradition says that even though in the depths of winter, Rita’s cousin succeeded in retrieving a Rose in full bloom and two figs from this very garden, as had been requested by Rita in her final days.

This evening, in nearby Cascia, the liturgical ceremony of the Transit will take place, as we remember the death of Rita: and afterwards, the traditional Candlelight Procession which recalls the moment in which the spirit of the saint returned from earthly life to the glory of the heavens.

The day of May 22nd is animated by a historical procession through the town, as the locals dress in costume, portraying the time in which the saint lived.

A ceremony in the basilica will be followed by the blessing of the roses, during which the roses are raised to the sky to receive this special blessing and it is with this event the celebrations for the feast of St. Rita of Cascia are concluded.

After our final prayer at the tomb of St. Rita we will drive to Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis and St. Clare. After free time for lunch, we will meet our guide and enjoy a walking tour of the medieval town. Beginning with a visit to the Basilica of St. Clare where we will venerate the remains of the founder of the Order of the Poor Clares, we will walk through the town and hear how both Francis and Clare relinquished lavish lifestyles in favour of a life of penance and prayer. Our day will conclude with Mass at the Basilica of St. Francis where we will see some of the finest frescoes depicting the life of St. Francis of Assisi. We will have time for private prayer at the tomb of St. Francis before driving to our hotel. After checking into our rooms, we will have time to relax before our evening meal.

DAY 4 - 23 May

This morning we will celebrate the closing Mass of our pilgrimage in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels and afterwards visit the Chapel of the Porziuncola where Francis realised his true calling and where on Palm Sunday 1212, he accepted Clare into the Order. We will see the Chapel of the Transito where Francis died, and the famous Rose Garden where today grow the miraculous roses without thorns. Time at leisure in the town of Assisi will give us the opportunity for some shopping and private sightseeing before we drive to Rome for our return flight to Dublin.

*It is our intention to follow the itinerary as outlined above, however due to many factors like local holidays, traffic or weather conditions it may be necessary to make changes to the order of events or even the cancelation of certain events.
