Pilgrimage Itinerary

DAY 1 - Pompeii

This morning we will depart from Dublin to Naples. In the arrivals hall we will be greeted by our Marian Pilgrimages guide and driver who will remain with us for the duration of our pilgrimage.

We will drive to the town of Pompeii, and upon arrival have free for lunch. Afterwards we will check into our hotel and have time to relax and unpack. We will celebrate the opening Mass of our pilgrimage in the Basilica of the Virgin of the Holy Rosary. The Papal Basilica has become an important place of pilgrimage with millions of pilgrims arriving each year to venerate the painting of the Virgin of the Holy Rosary of Pompeii. After Mass we will have the opportunity to venerate the miraculous painting and see the famous Rose sent by Padre Pio to Pompeii, just days before his death.

DAY 2 - Pietrelcina

The eruption of Vesuvius in 79AD almost destroyed the towns of Pompeii and Herculanuem. This morning there will be the opportunity to visit the ancient ruins of Pompeii, where one can walk down the remains of the ancient Roman streets, visit millennia-old houses, temples, shops, and amphitheatres (Guide & Entrance fee payable locally).

Alternatively, you may prefer to return to the basilica with your guide and learn of the life of its founder, Blessed Bartolo Longo, and his great works of charity. After an early lunch, we will depart Pompeii and drive through the countryside to the town of Pietrelcina, birthplace of Padre Pio.

We will celebrate Mass in the Church of the Holy Family and afterwards enjoy a walking tour of the town as we learn of the early years of Francesco Forgione (the future Padre Pio) and how he fulfilled his dream of becoming a monk with a beard. In Piana Romana we will see the tree before which Padre Pio received the first signs of the stigmata before continuing our drive to San Giovanni Rotondo where we will spend the next four nights of our pilgrimage. Upon arrival at our hotel, we will check into our rooms and have dinner.

DAY 3 - English Office & Capuchin friary

Our first morning in San Giovanni Rotondo will begin with the celebration of Mass in the ancient Church of Our Lady of Grace where Padre Pio celebrated Mass and heard confessions. During our visit to the English Office, we will be blessed with the glove of Padre Pio that covered the wounds of the stigmata and the crucifix used by the humble friar.

We will continue to walk in the footsteps of Padre Pio during his time in San Giovanni Rotondo. Visting the Capuchin friary will allow us to learn more about the “poor friar who prays” as he so often described himself. Here we will see the cell where the friar lived and died and the crucifix before which he received the stigmata. Our day will conclude with a visit to the Church of St. Pio of Pietrelcina where we will pray before the mortal remains of the great saint of our time.

DAY 4 - Shrine of St. Michael the Archangel

The Shrine of St. Michael the Archangel has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries and visited by figures such as St. Francis of Assisi, St. John Paul II, Blessed Carlo Acutis and St. Pio. As we drive to the town of Monte Sant’Angelo, we will hear of the apparitions of St. Michael the Archangel and later celebrate Mass in the sacred cave. Afterwards we will have time to stroll the cobbled streets of this unique town with its quaint, white-washed houses. We will have the afternoon at leisure for private sightseeing.

DAY 5 - “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza” past, present and future…

In 1956 Padre Pio presented to the world “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza” which today is now one of the most important hospitals in Europe. After Morning Mass, we will hear of the history behind this wonderful creation and listen to the testimony of one of the members of staff.

Walking the Way of the Cross in the afternoon, we will allow us as Christians to pause and enter reflectively into those last moments of Jesus’s journey of love. We will enjoy the remainder of the afternoon at leisure with the opportunity for private prayer.

DAY - Return home

This morning we depart San Giovanni Rotondo and drive to Naples airport as we return to our homes filled with joy in our hearts.

*It is our intention to follow the itinerary as outlined above, however due to many factors like local holidays, traffic or weather conditions it may be necessary to make changes to the order of events or even the cancelation of certain events.
