Pilgrimage Itinerary

DAY 1 Pietrelcina

This morning we will depart from Cork airport to Rome. Awaiting us in the arrival’s hall will be our Marian Pilgrimages guide and driver who will remain with our group for the duration. As we drive through the countryside to Pietrelcina, birthplace of St. Pio we will learn of the early years of Francesco Forgione (the future Padre Pio) and how he overcame many obstacles to fulfil his dream of becoming “a monk with a beard.”

After lunch in a local restaurant, we will celebrate Mass in the Church of the Holy Family and afterwards enjoy a walking tour of the town, visiting the room where baby Francesco was born, the Church of Sant ’Anna where he was baptised and the church where he celebrated his first Mass. In nearby Piana Romana, we will see the farmhouse of the Forgione family and have time for prayer before the tree beneath which Padre Pio received the first signs of the stigmata.

We will continue our drive to San Giovanni Rotondo and on arrival at our hotel, check into our rooms and have dinner. After dinner there will be opportunity to participate in the evening Rosary at the Old Tomb.

DAY 2 English Office – Capuchin Friary – Old Tomb of St. Pio

On the 26th of September 1968, the remains of Padre Pio were placed in the Old Tomb of the Church of Our Lady of Grace. This morning we will celebrate Mass in the Old Tomb, before the mortal remains of St. Pio.

After Mass we will visit the English Office where we will receive a blessing with the glove and crucifix used by the humble friar.

During our afternoon guided tour of the sanctuary, we will learn of the life of Padre Pio during his time in San Giovanni Rotondo. Visiting the capuchin friary will allow us to learn more about the “poor friar who prays” as he often described himself. Here we will have the opportunity to see the cell once occupied by the humble friar and the crucifix before which he received the stigmata.

After dinner there will be opportunity to participate in the evening Rosary at the Old Tomb.

DAY 3 Shrine of St. Michael the Archangel

Padre Pio had a great devotion to St. Michael the Archangel and travelled on pilgrimage to the shrine in Monte Sant’Angelo. As we drive to the sacred mountain, we will hear of the apparitions of St. Michael the Archangel in the Gargano and afterwards celebrate Mass in the cave. Afterwards, we will have time at leisure to take in the atmosphere of this quaint town, with its cobbled streets and white-washed houses.

In the afternoon we will visit St. Matthew’s Monastery. Located along the “Pilgrims Path,” the monastery of St. Matthew is a place rich in history, art, faith, and spirituality. This afternoon we will receive a blessing with the relic of St. Matthew and Holy Oil.

After dinner there will be opportunity to participate in the evening Rosary at the Old Tomb.

DAY 4 “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza” & Basilica of the Holy Face

In 1956 Padre Pio presented to the world “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza” which today is now one of the most important hospitals in Europe. After Morning Mass, we will hear of the history behind this wonderful creation and listen to the testimony of one of the members of staff.

We will depart San Giovanni Rotondo after lunch and drive to the Basilica of the Holy Face in the town of Manoppello. On display above the High Altar is, what tradition says the Veil of Veronica. We will have the opportunity to venerate the Image of the Holy Face and afterwards to admire the collection of votive objects which were left by pilgrims as acknowledgement of graces they received. We will drive through the countryside to Rome and after checking into our hotel, enjoy dinner.

DAY 5 Return home

This morning we will check out of our rooms and drive to the airport for our flight to Cork, as we return to our homes filled with a sense of joy and peace in our hearts.
