We will depart in the morning from Dublin to Rome. Upon arrival we will enjoy our first glimpses of the picturesque Italian countryside as we drive to the “Green Heart of Italy” to the town of Assisi, birthplace of St. Francis and St. Clare.
Upon arrival we will check into our hotel and have free time for lunch.
We will celebrate the opening Mass of our pilgrimage in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli and afterwards visit the chapel of the Porziuncola, the birthplace of the Franciscan Order and see the Chapel of the Transito where St. Francis died.
DAY 2 – 29th May
This morning we will celebrate Mass in the Basilica of St. Clare, founder of the Order of the Poor Clares. We will enjoy a guided tour of the medieval town of Assisi as we learn more of the life of St. Francis and that of St. Clare. Our morning tour will end at the Basilica of St. Francis where we will have time for prayer at the tomb of the saint and later admire the wonderful frescoes and works of Giotto, Cimabue, and Simone Martini.
We will have the afternoon at leisure for shopping and personal sightseeing.
DAY 3 – 30th May
This morning we will begin to explore the region of Umbria with a visit to the medieval town of Siena. We will celebrate Mass in the Basilica of St. Dominic we will begin our guided tour as we learn of Saint Catherine of Siena with a visit to the former home of the wonderful saint. Our walk through the quaint narrow streets will bring us to the famous “Piazza del Campo”, regarded as one of the most beautiful squares in all of Italy. We will have the afternoon at leisure to explore this wonderful town and return in the evening to Assisi.
DAY 4 – 31st May
This morning we will celebrate Mass at the Convent of San Damiano. Located in a beautiful setting just outside the walls of Assisi, the Church and Convent of San Damiano is the place where St. Francis received his miraculous calling in 1205 and where St. Clare died in 1253 – an important stop on a pilgrimage to the Franciscan Holy City. We will have the afternoon at leisure with the opportunity to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of these wonderful surroundings.
DAY 5 – 1st June
After breakfast we will check out of our hotel and drive to Rome for our return flight to Dublin.
