Pilgrimage Itinerary

Wednesday, 23rd December

We will depart in the afternoon from Dublin to Naples and upon arrival drive to the four-star Bel Sito Hotel le Due Torri where we will spend the opening night of our pilgrimage. We will check into our rooms and afterwards enjoy our evening meal.

Thursday, 24th December

This morning we will catch our first glimpse of the picturesque countryside as we drive to the town of Pietrelcina, birthplace of St. Pio. After the celebration of Mass, we will have a guided walking tour of the town and learn of the life of the young Francesco Forgione (future Padre Pio) and how he realised his dream of becoming “a monk with a beard.”

After free time for lunch we will see the contrasting landscapes as we drive to our destination of San Giovanni Rotondo, where we will stay for three nights in the four-star San Giovanni Rotondo Palace Hotel.

After our evening meal we will have the opportunity to attend the Christmas Vigil Mass at the sanctuary.

Friday, 25th December

After morning Mass, we will visit the old tomb in the Church of Our Lady of Grace where the remains of St. Pio rested for over forty years and where we will have time for private prayer before the mortal remains of the great saint of our time. We will return to our hotel and enjoy a typical Italian Christmas dinner.

In the afternoon we will learn of the life of Padre Pio during his time in San Giovanni Rotondo with a visit to the capuchin friary where we will see the cell where the humble friar lived and died and the crucifix before which Padre Pio received the gift of the stigmata.

Saturday, 26th December

This morning we will travel to the town of Monte Sant’Angelo, home to the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to the Archangel Michael. We will celebrate Mass in the sacred cave and later have time at leisure in the quaint town, famous for its whitewashed houses.

We will return to our hotel for our St. Stephen’s Day lunch, sampling some products typical of the region. We will have time to return to the sanctuary before we join together for our Gala Dinner in the elegant surroundings of the Bistro Reale.

Sunday, 27th December

After breakfast we will depart our hotel and drive to Naples airport as we return to our homes with fond memories of our Christmas in San Giovanni Rotondo!

*It is our intention to follow the itinerary as outlined above, however due to many factors like local holidays, traffic or weather conditions it may be necessary to make changes to the order of events or even the cancelation of certain events.
