Pilgrimage Itinerary

Monday, 20th April

This morning we will depart from Dublin to Naples with Aer lingus. On arrival in Naples we will meet our guide and enjoy the wonderful scenery as we drive through the countryside to the village of Pietrelcina, birthplace of St. Pio.

After lunch in a local restaurant, we will begin to learn of the life of the young Francesco Forgione and how he overcame all obstacles to realise his dream of becoming “a monk with a beard”. We will celebrate the opening Mass of our pilgrimage in the Church of Sant’Anna where baby Francesco was baptised and later see the parish church where the newly ordained Padre Pio celebrated his first Mass.

We will visit Piana Romana where we will see the farmhouse of the Forgione family and later have time for prayer before the tree beneath which Padre Pio received the first signs of the stigmata.

We will continue our drive onto San Giovanni Rotondo where we will stay in the Hotel Colonne for the following three nights on a full board basis.

Tuesday, 21st April

We will celebrate morning Mass in the old tomb of the Church of Our Lady of Grace where the remains of the saint rested for over forty years and afterwards enjoy a tour of the capuchin friary where the humble friar lived and died.

After lunch we will visit the English Office where we will learn more of the life of St. Pio and receive a blessing with the glove and crucifix of the friar. Our day will end with a visit to the Church of St. Pio of Pietrelcina where we will have time for prayer before the mortal remains of the great saint of our time.

Wednesday, 22nd April

This morning we will travel to the Shrine of St. Michael the Archangel and celebrate Mass in the sacred cave. Afterwards we will enjoy time at leisure to explore the town of Monte Sant’Angelo with its white-washed houses and quaint cobbled streets. We will continue onto St. Matthew’s monastery and receive a blessing with the relic of St. Matthew and holy oil before returning to our hotel for lunch.

In the afternoon we will walk the Way of the Cross which allow us, as Christians, to pause and enter reflectively into those last moments of Jesus’s journey of love. We will have the remainder of the afternoon at leisure with the opportunity for the sacrament of reconciliation and private prayer.

Thursday, 23rd April

This morning we will visit the hospital, “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza”, Padre Pio’s greatest creation that has grown into one of the most important research centres in Europe.

After lunch we will depart San Giovanni Rotondo and travel to the nearby town of Foggia. We will celebrate the closing Mass of our pilgrimage in the Church of Sant’Anna. Afterwards we will visit the cell occupied by Padre Pio and have time for private prayer in the choir loft where Padre Pio would spend time each day in prayer.

We will enjoy the contrasting landscapes as we drive to the Bel Sito Hotel le Due Torri in Avellino where we will spend the last night of our pilgrimage.

Friday, 24th April

After breakfast we will check out of our hotel and drive to Naples airport for our return flight to Dublin, filled with a sense of gratitude, joy and peace in our hearts.

*It is our intention to follow the itinerary as outlined above, however due to many factors like local holidays, traffic or weather conditions it may be necessary to make changes to the order of events or even the cancelation of certain events.
