Day 1 - Wednesday 30th September
15:30 check in Dublin airport T1 for Ryanair flight to Treviso, Venice departing at 17:30
and arriving at 21:10. Transfer to our 4 Carlton Hotel in Treviso for 3 nights, dinner, bed & breakfast.
Day 2 - Thursday 1st October
Morning will be free in Treviso. Treviso has Celtic origins as it was thought that the Celts settled here originally. In 89BC however the settlement was turned into a Roman Commune and developed into an important city. Throughout the Middle Ages, Treviso was part of the Lombard League and was involved in various sieges and conflicts, hence the need for its stunning city walls and defensive towers. It is said that Treviso is the site of the original production of Prosecco wine, and some historians believe it is the birthplace of the Italian dessert Tiramisu. This afternoon we drive to Padua and visit the Basilica and Tomb of St Anthony, and shrine of St Leopold Mandic where we wil have teh first Mass of our pilgrimage. Padua is located to the south west of Treviso and can be reached via train or bus in approximately one hour. This commune has a great deal to offer considering its relative size and it is known as being the university city where Galileo was educated. The main attractions of Padua include the gorgeous Basilica di Sant Antonio, the Piazza dei Signori, Padua Cathedral and the botanical gardens. Furthermore, like Treviso and Venice, Padua has a small network of canals that are waiting to be explored. Transfer back to Treviso for dinner and overnight.
Day 3 - Friday 2nd October
Full day in Venice. We will take in a guided tour of Venice and visit St. Mark’s Square. Take some free time to explore this wonderful city. The city of Venice is actually made up of hundreds of small islands that are interconnected with canals and bridges. The Grand Canal flows through the centre of Venice and serves as the main thoroughfare through the city – consider taking a water taxi or a gondola on here to the Rialto Bridge. Aside from the canals, Venice also has a range of beautiful structures such as St. Mark’s Campanile, St. Mark’s Cathedral, the Chiesa di San Giorgio Maggiore and the aforementioned Rialto Bridge. This historical city is bursting with attractions and can be reached from Treviso in under 40 minutes by train or bus. After our day in Venice we transfer back to our hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 4 - Saturday 3rd October
This morning we drive to Verona. Walk around the city of Romeo and Juliet. After lunch (payable locally) we continue to Innsbruck for overnight dinner, bed and breakfast
Day 5 - Sunday 4th October
After breakfast this morning we drive to Oberammergau. Arrive in Oberammergau for lunch. Following lunch, we will make our way to the world famous theater to attend the performance of a lifetime, the 42nd Oberammergau Passion Play. The sleepy village springs to life every ten years to put on a play that draws the world upon it! We, too, will become part of mission of the Passion of Christ, the greatest story ever told. We all share His message of faith and love! The Oberammergau Passion Play tells the story of the Passion of Christ, beginning with His entry into Jerusalem, followed by His trial, crucifixion, resurrection and ascension. The play is held in a beautiful open air theater that is praised for its superb acoustics. There are 2,000 actors (and live animals), they include local wood carvers, hotel owners, students, teachers, children, all of them interrupt their schedules to become actors, singers, orchestra members and stagehands. Requirements are strict: all actors must be born in Oberammergau, or have lived there 20 years, or be married to a villager and a resident for 10 years. All natural makeup, such as men let their hair and beards grow a year before the play. Female roles are limited to single women under age 35.
The Play is approximately five and a half hours long and is performed in two acts.
Act I : 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Intermission: 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm; enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
Act II (May 16 - Aug 16 ): 8:00 pm - 10:30 pm
After the play we will check into the Hotel Post Ettal for 1 night dinner, bed and breakfast.
Day 6 - Monday 5th October
This morning we will have some free time in Oberammergau until our transfer to Memmingem airport for Ryanair flight to Dublin departing at 21:10 and due to arrive in Dublin T1 at 22:35
