Pilgrimage Itinerary

Monday, 15 October

We will depart Lixnaw by coach to Dublin airport for our flight to Naples. Upon arrival we will be met by our Tour Escort and transfer to the Bel Sito Hotel le Due Torri in Avellino where we will stay for one night on a half board basis. Light refreshments on arrival.

Tuesday, 16 October

This morning we will check out of our hotel and travel to Pietrelcina, birthplace of St. Pio. We will celebrate Mass in the Church of the Holy Family and afterwards enjoy a walking tour of the picturesque town visiting the Forgione family home and the Church of Sant’Anna where the future Padre Pio was baptised.

After free time for lunch we will visit nearby Piana Romana and see the tree beneath which Padre Pio received the invisible stigmata. After time for private prayer we will continue onto San Giovanni Rotondo where we will stay in the Hotel Colonne for the following five nights.

Wednesday, 17 October

We will celebrate morning Mass in the ancient church in San Giovanni Rotondo where Padre Pio celebrated Mass and heard confessions and afterwards visit the English office where we will hear about the life of St. Pio and receive a blessing with the glove and crucifix of the humble friar.

In the afternoon we will have a tour of the sanctuary. We will visit the capuchin friary where Padre Pio lived and see the crucifix where 100 years ago he received the gift of the stigmata. We will continue onto the Church of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, inaugurated in 2004. As we make our way to the crypt we will have the opportunity to admire the wonderful mosaics of Fr. Marko Ivan Rupnik, depicting the lives of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Pio of Pietrelcina. Upon arrival in the crypt we will venerate the mortal remains of St. Pio and have time for private prayer.

Thursday, 18 October

This morning we will celebrate Mass in the hospital, ‘Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza’, considered to have been Padre Pio’s greatest creation. We will enjoy a short tour of the hospital and afterwards walk the Way of the Cross. This afternoon we will have at leisure with time for private prayer.

Friday, 19 October

In the morning we will travel to Monte Sant’ Angelo, home to the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to the Archangel Michael. We will celebrate Mass at the sacred cave and afterwards have free time for sightseeing before returning to San Giovanni Rotondo.

After lunch we will visit nearby St. Matthew’s monastery and receive a blessing with the relic of St. Matthew and holy oils.

Saturday, 20 October

After the celebration of Mass we will visit the house of Mary Pyle, on this the year of the 50th anniversary of her death. This wonderful lady gave up her wealthy lifestyle and came to San Giovanni Rotondo where she opened her door to the many pilgrims and cared for both parents of Padre Pio in their final days. Afterwards we will visit the nearby cemetery where the parents of Padre Pio, Mary Pyle and Fr. Alessio are buried. We will have the afternoon at leisure with time for prayer at the crypt of St. Pio.

Sunday, 21 October

After breakfast we will transfer to Naples airport for our return flight to Dublin and onward coach transfer to Lixnaw.
