Pilgrimage Itinerary

Wednesday, 19th September

In the morning we will depart from Dublin to Naples. Upon arrival we will be met by our Tour Escort and transfer to Pietrelcina, birthplace of St. Pio.

After free time for lunch we will take a walking tour of the town, visiting the Forgione family home where Padre Pio was born and the Church of Sant’Anna where he was baptised. Afterwards we will celebrate the opening Mass of our pilgrimage in the Church of the Holy Family and visit the adjoining museum.

We will transfer to nearby Piana Romana where we will see the tree beneath which Padre Pio received the invisible stigmata before continuing on to San Giovanni Rotondo where we will stay in the Hotel Approdo for the following five nights.

Thursday, 20th September

After celebrating morning Mass we will visit the English Office where we will hear of the incredible life of St. Pio and have a blessing with the glove and crucifix of the saint.

In the afternoon we will visit the old tomb, the capuchin friary where the humble friar lived and died and the choir loft of the ancient church where on this day 100 years ago Padre Pio received the gift of the Stigmata.

Our tour will finish in the impressive Church of St. Pio of Pietrelcina where we will have time for prayer in the crypt before the mortal remains of this great saint of our time.

Friday, 21st September

After breakfast we will travel to Lanciano, site of the first Eucharistic Miracle of the Catholic Church which took place in the 8th century A.D. We will celebrate Mass and afterwards have free time for lunch and sightseeing before returning to San Giovanni Rotondo.

Saturday, 22nd September

This morning we will travel to Monte Sant’ Angelo, home to the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to the Archangel Michael. We will celebrate Mass at the sacred cave and afterwards have free time for sightseeing.

We will continue onto St. Matthew’s monastery where we will have a blessing with the relic of St. Matthew and holy oils.

We will have the afternoon at leisure as we prepare for the vigil celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the death of this great saint of our time.

Sunday, 23rd September

This morning we will celebrate Mass at the sanctuary and afterwards walk the Way of the Cross.

We will have the afternoon at leisure and in the evening join with the local people of San Giovanni Rotondo in procession through the town as we celebrate the life of St. Pio.

Monday, 24th September

This morning we will celebrate Mass in the chapel of the hospital, ‘Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza’, and afterwards have a tour of what is considered to have been Padre Pio’s greatest creation.

After lunch we will travel to Bari where we will visit the 12th century Basilica of St. Nicholas which houses relics of the popular saint. We will have a tour of the basilica and afterwards have time at leisure before transferring to Bari airport for our return flight to Dublin.
